Life and witness
Saint Ephraim Katounakiotis lived from 1912 to 1998. Born in Ampelochori near Thebes with the baptismal name Evangelos Papanikitas, he entered monastic life at Katounakia on Mount Athos in 1933. He was ordained a priest in 1936. The Ecumenical Patriarchate canonized him on March 9, 2020. He is commemorated on February 27.
Historical setting
Saint Ephraim grew up in Boeotia and completed his schooling in Thebes. In September 1933 he joined the brotherhood of Elders Ephraim and Nikephoros at the hermitage of Saint Ephraim the Syrian in Katounakia. He first received the monastic name Longinos and, on receiving the great schema in 1935, the name Ephraim. His priestly ordination followed the next year.
Legacy and remembrance
With the blessing of his elder, Saint Ephraim formed a lasting spiritual bond with Saint Joseph the Hesychast. The Jesus Prayer, watchfulness, the Divine Liturgy, and the struggle against vanity shaped his life. Visitors sought his counsel in the remote Athonite cells. After a stroke in 1996 he needed continuing care; he died in February 1998. He is distinct from Saint Ephraim the Syrian and Elder Ephraim of Philotheou and Arizona.
More about the life
The diocesan life describes Saint Ephraim as a guide both to monks and to people living in families. It distinguishes willing obedience inspired by love of God from mechanical submission, and recalls his care for young people considering marriage. Saint Ephraim continued the prayerful life he had learned from his elders while receiving visitors and offering spiritual counsel. His remembrance joins the quiet of Katounakia with a ministry that reached beyond the monastic community.
Quotes
Obedience means that we place our own discernment into the care of the rich discernment of the spiritual father.
