Life and witness

Sophrony Sakharov lived from 1896 to 1993. He became a monk on Mount Athos and a disciple of Saint Silouan. In 1959 he founded the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist at Tolleshunt Knights in Essex. The Ecumenical Patriarchate recognized him as a saint on November 27, 2019. His selected fixed feast is July 11.

Historical setting

Sophrony went to Mount Athos in 1925 and lived at the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon. He helped preserve Silouan’s handwritten teaching. His later community in Essex belongs to the Ecumenical Patriarchate and combines monastic prayer with the reception of visitors.

Legacy and remembrance

The Essex monastery identifies Sophrony’s writings and those of his community as witnesses to its spiritual life. Modern editions remain copyrighted unless separately licensed. The image here is a photograph taken in 1976, released by its photographer, not a painted icon.

More about the life

The supplementary church account recalls Sophrony’s early work as a painter and his life in Paris before he embraced monasticism on Athos. After Silouan’s death, he spent a period in greater solitude and later returned to France to publish the elder’s life and teaching. His eventual foundation in Essex gave that teaching a lasting communal home. The monastery’s own account confirms its foundation in 1959 and its jurisdiction under the Ecumenical Patriarchate. His later writing includes the spiritual autobiography We Shall See Him as He Is.

Quotes

A sourced selection, not a popularity ranking. Quote wording stays in the cited language; context notes are editorial.

No quotations have been approved for this collection yet. This does not mean that no authentic words survive. See the readings and sources below.

Selected reading

No quotation is published here yet: a primary-text passage and usable edition must be verified first. This does not imply that the saint left no writings or recorded words.

Writings and works

Checked against Eastern Orthodox sources. Written works, recorded teaching, and works about the saint are distinguished.

External sources may be in another language. Modern editions and translations can be copyrighted; full books are not copied here.

Miracles and testimony

These summaries distinguish Scripture, hagiographical accounts and later testimony. A source establishes that an event was reported, not independent proof of its supernatural cause. Miracles are attributed to God, not autonomous powers of saints. Reports of healing are not medical advice or a promise of recovery.

No source-checked account has been included in this section yet. This is a limit of this collection, not a claim that no miracles are associated with this person.

Research and reading notes

These are original editorial biographies, not copied source translations. Scripture, historical writing, and hagiographical tradition are distinguished in the text. This page is a study introduction, not an exhaustive critical edition or a personal spiritual rule.

The saints listed here are commemorated by Eastern Orthodox churches. These summaries and translations are independent editorial work, not official Church publications or Church-approved translations.
